Matriarch of Aunt Charlotte’s in Merchantville, 93, ‘made people happy,’

MERCHANTVILLE – For decades, Bunny Oakford was responsible for making Aunt Charlotte’s Candies look as good as its products tasted.

She mentored longtime employees of the Merchantville store on everything from making the perfect Easter basket bow to dressing the candy store’s famously ornate windows.
Meredith Gordy, who’s worked at Aunt Charlotte’s for 30 years, said after she took on window-decorating duties, she’d find little notes that Oakford had left her in the display.
“They’d say, ‘Looks pretty,’ or ‘Looks beautiful. I wouldn’t have thought of doing that,’ ” Gordy recalled. “She would sign them ‘Mrs. O.’ The last couple of notes she left me were signed ‘Bunny.’ ”

Virginia “Bunny” Oakford, who ran the store alongside her husband, second-generation owner, C. Brooks Oakford, died Dec. 10 at age 93.

She’s being remembered for her thoughtfulness and attention to detail — and not just in the way she ran the business.
